This post today represents the 199th post on Cantankerous Old Coots.  I thought we could take a peek back at the year that was and explore a bit about this site, and the snarky comment that started it all.

It is only appropriate that Ralph will have the 200th post on the Coots.  Not only has he posted the most on this site, it was his comment over on my blog Catharsis of the Bogue that started all of this madness.  It was March 22nd of last year that I started this site.  On the 23rd I wrote the following post:

Well folks I did something very impulsive last night. I was sitting here trying to come up with some topic to write on. I am tired and only partially fueled by caffeine. My wife said I had that “look” and tonight’s post would be a doozy. She has seen the writing frenzy that exhaustion and caffeine has wrought.
The problem was this. Carlos sucked all of the ideas out of me during the PreWriting Challenge! Ok not really but it has been a day of writers block for post titles. I have a couple of story ideas though. I had a thought this morning after taking the kids to school that I hope I was not running dry of ideas. I am almost at my 3 month mark and ready to push past it.
I know there are more ideas, I just either need more sleep or more caffeine to make them flow. Or some good inspiration. I went and read some blogs, left some comments and tweeted a bit. After that I went back to look at my comments just hoping there was something there.
And there was! My internet buddy and purveyor of many life experiences Ralph(http://ralphcarlsonblog.com/) had left a comment. The discussion was about niches, and fitting in, when Ralph says,
“I am not sure that there is any market for cantankerous old coots but if there were, I’d claim it.”
I laughed and replied that I would sign up for the RSS feed of that. I didn’t think much more about it until Dave Doolin pipes up with his sage advice to go claim it. So I did. Coming in the next week or so, I will have a bunch of work with another blog at www.cantankerousoldcoots.com.
I think I am going to fill the blog with the wisdom and rants of those older than me, even though I am getting up there myself. I hope to get Ralph to fill the first guest post with something profound, and later Dave with something that would be totally inappropriate on his site.
I need to create a badge….crossed Preparation H and Ben Gay over a grouchy old guy’s face…. Our motto could be “Whatever” and our niche is “Advice for life from old coots.” We of course would have to adopt a Red Green type lodge… Hmmmm there are many possibilities. I would love to hear suggestions. We would have bylaws too…if you are under 40 you need to have an old coot persona or you can’t be published. Only rants on things that were better in the past could be posted. Any bowel problems are better off on your own site unless they have a really funny punchline and a cute nurse involved.
Wow I must be tired. This is going to be huge amounts of fun. Let me know what you think in the comments and sign up for my newsletter, I will keep updates in that as well!
Thanks for reading!

And now here we are 200 posts, 6 authors and 134,000 words published.  It has been a good year.  If you are new to this blog, thanks for coming!  Sign up for our newsletter and get the first Coots e-book from Cantankerous Old Coots University.  If you are one of our long time readers, thanks for sticking around and boosting our numbers!  If you have never commented, now is a good time to do so!  If you feel feverish, head on over to one of the Coots other blogs: Ralph’s, Bob’s or mine.

Also, Bob is a little under the weather this weekend and will not be spending it in his yurt where he belongs.  Send him a message over there to the right or to bob@cantankerousoldcoots.com  and let him know you are thinking about him.  Hopefully he will be back at full strength soon!

Have a great weekend

-Justin

Confusing signal

It gets confusing looking at all of these old posts coming up from the archives.  Some of them are really pretty good and I am glad they are out again to inspire someone.  Hopefully.  Well  if you havent noticed, this is not a podcast.  Why?  I just don’t feel like it this week.  Much like Bob, lassiez- faire is the way to go for this week.

What is that Bob?  You are not lassiez-faire?  Where is Tuesday’s “podio” production?  Anyway, this post is a response to Ralph‘s post yesterday.  He brings up some good points.

The meteoric rise of the Coots is great, but why is it happening and what can we do to make it happen more?  Where are the people that want to beat down our digital door to learn how to be cantankerous?  I’ll tell you, they are still out there.  They are waiting for the time when the lessons are on video and audio and we are charging $19.95 for them.

I can do that if it will help.  In the meantime we will have to be content with podio (still sounds like something I need to do to get my kid out of diapers) from Bob and commentary from the rest of us.  We may never understand exactly why this blog works.

We may never make actual money from it.  Scratch that, we haven’t made any money yet but now that we have that new program that links bank accounts and passwords to visiting IP addresses…wait, you are not supposed to know about that.

In light of success and always trying to manage it to create something more, hopefully better, we are switching things up a bit.  We will still have old posts from the vast hoard of wonderfulness that we have spewed forth over the past year and a half.    Those post up rather randomly but still worth the read.

Bob will be bringing us “The Political Coot”  live on Tuesday mornings at 10 AM Eastern.  That is 6 AM on the west coast kids…too damn early if you ask me.  If you miss the live session you can catch the replay the next Monday right here on the Coots.

Ralph will continue to be the workhorse backbone of the Coots and will still publish whatever the hell he wants on Wednesday.  If a big enough burr gets under his saddle then Saturday will have a post.  Sunday, the CNS news service survives for now, it may not in the future.

Justin will continue to try and sollicit guest posts from our frequent commentors, Hansi, this means you.  He ( Justin not Hansi) will also be posting whatever comes to mind on Thursday and Friday.  Thursday should be a podcast but, like today, it isn’t.  Friday is up in the air if it will be a podcast or not.  We still have to have something to actually read on here.

So there you have it folks, the Coots are on the rise and we will be taking over your bank accounts  er internet systems and browsers soon!  and remember, from the comments on Ralph’s post,

Maybe that is the secret to happiness and the meaning of life- a giant 404 error.

This has been an interesting week.  We started a new contest here at the Coots.  We were trying to see who could write the best post, in terms of generating discussion.  Bob started off snarky and then Ralph went all sugary sweet and praising.

Enough to make me sick.  All of it.  In the end, Bob has the most comments on his post, I think he is paying some big bucks to win this little contest.   Now really, do you folks need any more of Bob?

Small poll here:

[wp_surveys]

That’s what I thought.  Now I am not exactly sure what to do with this post.  I should just sit under my tree and let the delicate sound of the kettlebell inspire more creativity.

In fact, my first instinct was to just shut up and let my creative superiority ebb and flow across the coots so that everyone is under my benevolent spell.  My second instinct is to crack my knuckles and write a post to make angels weep and the sun turn away in fear.

**If you missed Bob’s debut here at the coots check it out here.  If you wan’t to read some sage wisdom about simple living check out his great blog at JuicyMaters.com.  Thanks for another great article Bob, you are most definitely now one of us Coots**

Sheesh!  Lately it seems that this is Old Cantankerous Coots instead of Cantankerous Old Coots.  Ol’ Ralph over there concentrates on retirement over there at his blog, and then links us to other bloggers who talk about retirement, some very active retirement but retirement just the same, and I just sit here, fat and happy, making those funny raspberry noises…phlettttt…

I’ve done my best to ignore the aging issue, and some health problems have conspired to help me do so.   After all, I can blame my inability to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail on diabetes based foot problems, NOT on the aging process.  My lack of endurance I can lay at the feet of my own stupidity, smoking induced COPD, NOT on the aging process.  Same thing with my lack of strength.  A couple of years ago I decided that my shrink in rehab didn’t know what he was talking about, that I could have a drink, just one little itty bitty drink before dinner, and not go back to the half gallon of gin a day I had indulged in for a few years before going to rehab.  Eight months later I found myself in the ICU almost dead from malnutrition and a badly damaged liver.  See?  My lack of strength is due to the booze, NOT the aging process.

This morning though, I got slapped in the face with the cold dead fish of reality.  Oddly, it was not a physical limitation that woke me up, but a mental unwillingness to do what I used to do.

A little you need to know about me so this make sense.  Either I am Oscar Madison or Oscar Madison is me.  I purchased my housekeeping skills at Oscar Madison R Us.  My philosophy tends toward, “Wash the dishes?  Why?  There are still clean dishes to use…”

Combined with that has always been a college kid’s nonchalance toward left over food storage.

OK…  With that background, I ordered a pizza last night.  Not a personal pan size pizza, not even a large pizza, but a super sized great big humongous pizza.  After all, the difference in price between a small pizza and a ginormous pizza these days is about 37¢, and (college kid thinking here) the leftovers would make  a fantastic breakfast this morning, right?

Well, I got up this morning, fixed my coffee, and felt my stomach say “feed me, feed me”.  I walked into the kitchen, saw the pizza box on the counter (where any college kid would have left it), and started to eat the remainder for breakfast.

“Started to” is the operative phrase here.

Shit!  Maybe I am getting old(er).

Bob comes to us with a skeptical attitude and a full cup of Cantankerousness. He also writes about homesteading and yurts over at JuicyMaters.com and rants about politics at Common-Sense-Conversation.com Most of the time, though, you'll find him at HayleStorm.net, cranking out great websites for clients OR writing tutorials teaching them to build their own sites.
