Great men don’t grow on trees.

Once in a lifetime, maybe even two lifetimes, a great man comes along. Who knows if it is the times that make the man or if the quality of greatness just can’t be contained and bursts through whatever the times. Whatever, it is clear to me that we now have such a man in the White House. Who can deny that our President brings together Kansas common sense, third world understanding and Ivy League intellect in one polished bundle. I have to confess that until now his greatness eluded me. I was intrigued when he was first anointed in the Iowa caucuses. After all what could those ethanol sniffing rubes in our heartland know about greatness?  He emerged as a man to watch but I didn’t think he had the seasoning to make it through the grueling primaries just to get the Democrat Party nomination let alone take the prize. There were a few tense moments but the competition collapsed under the charm and wit of the future President.

Now looking back, it is all clear. He said he was going to transform the country and indeed he has. The power of his election swept huge majorities in both houses of Congress and the rest is history. The man is impressive.

But wait, there’s more

Much as I had to respect his accomplishments up to now, however, my respect for his greatness got an even bigger boost recently when I discovered that among his impressive talents was one I never suspected- the man can read my heart.

He knows my inner secrets

Deep in my innermost being there is an uncontrollable urge that takes primacy over all others. I don’t usually express it publicly but truly every action that I take is based on a force I can’t control. I never knew what to call it. I never spoke about it until now and it was never a big topic with my political bedfellows even though I was sure that we shared this urge. It wasn’t until the President called me out that I recognized it for what it was- my holy grail. The Presidents great insight pierced my being to the core and reveled that it was more than an urge; even more than a passion. It was the holy grail of my being. I lust to give tax cuts to the wealthy.

It feels so good to be free at last

I can’t tell you what a relief the President’s great insight provided me. I had always been confused by actions for which I could never identify a core belief. Before I never understood how my actions and political beliefs must have been incomprehensible to others. Our President was not confused. He saw clearly into my heart and spoke truth to my confusion. Democrats have always been confounded by the inexplicable behavior of Republicans because it made no sense. How could Republicans be so stupid and self-destructive by giving tax cuts to people with more money than they have. They didn’t understand that uncontrollable urge and certainly not its power over Republicans. They never realized that this peculiar urge was our Holy Grail.

Thanks to the President’s wisdom, I am free from confusion and doubt. Now that I understand the forces controlling me, I can hope for salvation and maybe even a cure for my malady. I owe it all to a great man – President Obama.

Sometimes I just think the know-it-all kids might be able to run things better than us old farts (and fartettes).  Maybe we just ought to turn all the country’s problems over to them to solve.  They’ll probably do it in about a week and a half.

Just ask them…they’ll be glad to tell you.  Apparently, from about age 18 to age 25 is when a human is the smartest and can do the best analytical thinking, and after that it’s all downhill.  So…if they are so damn smart, let them figger things out for us.

This was brought home YET AGAIN this past week when Megan McCain, the dumb blonde bimbo highly intelligent and discerning daughter of Sen. John McCain opened her mouth…again.

Does anyone besides me wish she would just shut…the…hell…up?  If she weren’t Sen McCain’s daughter she’d be just another dumb blonde…like, awesome…Valley Girl wannabe.  Instead, the media treats her like the second coming of Socrates, spreading her insight far and wide.

How does a 26 year old who hasn’t yet learned to wipe her rear without a diagram and written instructions get so smart so young…and she must be smart…

Last week she shared with us…and with the breathlessly listening main stream media…that  Christine O’Donnell, the senate candidate from Delaware, shouldn’t be elected because she is not qualified.  Well, just what makes one “qualified”, Megan?

(“Megan” because you are a know-it-all snot-nosed brat.  Gain some age…and wisdom…and you might earn a Ms. McCain.)

Megan, just what kind of qualifications do you feel someone needs to have in order to hold elected office?  Let’s look at a couple of elected officials for guidance, OK?

There once was a small town country lawyer from Illinois.  He was mostly self-educated, and was not a lawyer with a polished resume.  His political career consisted of several failed attempts to get elected to local and state office before his single win.  He was not a polished speaker and was not notably educated on national and foreign policy of the day.  He was much like Christine O’Donnell in that he was simply a good man of average intellect who wanted to just do the right thing.

The second politician was also of average intellect, but had a far more extensive unofficial political education having been raised in the politics of a navy admiral’s household and absorbing the politics of national defense.  He attended the US Naval Academy and served as a Navy carrier pilot where his only notable act was to be shot down over North Vietnam.  As a POW he showed himself to be an American patriot.  So far, so good…but after being released from captivity and leaving the navy he was bitten by the political bug and was elected by his wife’s money and his war hero status to the United States senate, where he changes his position on issues as often as I change my underwear, always sticking his finger in the air to test the currents before deciding what he thinks.

I like inexperienced and unqualified better.

Meghan, the first inexperienced, unqualified (by your standards, anyway) politician was Abraham Lincoln.  The second is your father.

I think it’s best you, like, you know, just shut up.

Podcast 3: Gettysburg

Hello Folks.  Today’s podcast marks another of our countries historical times, the dedication of the battlefield cemetary at Gettysburg, PA by President Lincoln in 1863.  The original address was delivered on November 19th of that year.  I think it is very important to remember many points in our history.  This one, 147 years ago speaks of our continual growth as a nation, and our pursuit of the ideals that were set forth by the Founding Fathers in the Revolutionary War, and sealed in the Constitution of the United States.  The Text of the Gettysburg address follows. The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate—we cannot consecrate—we cannot hallow—this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom— and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

It’s over.  All the hype and hysteria; all the pathos and melodrama; all the lies and deceit: They are all history.  And we are just about in the same place we were before.  There is no mandate for change.  The players stay in place and nobody seems to care about the fiscal cliff ahead or the dependency model that reelecting the President endorses.  I don’t believe that the voters voted with their heads but it is what it is.  The problem is what to do next.

Face the fire!

The country may be going to hell in a hand basket but more than 50 percent of the people who vote don’t seem to notice- or maybe they just like the warmer temperatures.  Whatever the virtues of the American independence and can do spirit, they don’t seem to resonate with voters anymore.

Gurus always say that you can’t fix a problem unless you take ownership.  Up until now I’ve been telling myself that the problem is those other people.  I don’t have a problem.  I have the right attitude and appreciation of our country and freedoms.  Well, the truth is that if I don’t have a problem; if I didn’t have any responsibility for the sorry state our country is in then I don’t have a prayer for doing anything to change it.  The only thing I can change is myself.

My Agenda is Clear.

I have been lazy.  I have been complacent and self-indulgent.  I didn’t do my part for the country I love and the result is revealed in the election results.  I depended on somebody else to defend my rights and privileges and coasted through the campaign. It is my fault.  I claim the failure and commit to fixing myself in order to be the citizen I need to be and correct our country’s course.

So forgive the gloomy tone today.  I just needed to work through all my rationalizations and disappointment about the election and own up to my failure.  Those blisters I’m sitting on are all my own.  And if I want something to change, it’s up to me.
