You never have to look far to find stupidity in government, and public schools make themselves SUCH an easy target.  You might call the public education industry a target rich environment for folks looking for poor performance among government agencies.

School discipline is an especially easy target when you want to ridicule a government agency, their administrators generally using “zero tolerance” as an excuse to check their good judgement (if they had any to begin with) at the door.

Here are two fine examples of what “zero tolerance” can do…and in the second case we get a two-fer…zero tolerance combined with political correctness.

You DO know what political correctness is, don’t you? It’s trying to pick up a turd by the clean end.

So…learn all about suspending children for normal bodily functions and innocuous comments.

Down with Spam!

This is not a new topic.  This is not even fun.  There are probably ten million posts about the evils of spam and here is another one.  Evey morning for the past week or more I have been bombarded with over 400 of the same message, from the same sender.  And they all are about viagra.

I really have tried to unsubscribe from these but I still end up with a ton of email.  It is easy enough to delete but still, it takes so much time sorting through the crap.  I know each and every one of you out there are sick of it too.  Monty python has a slightly different take on spam:

That is still one of the funniest sketches ever.  Now, onto email.  There are those lists you get on that you may even opt on for that send you so much $#!^ every day they might as well be spam.  And these guys are the ones who say how much they hate spam as much as you do.  Maybe that is why our email list here is so anorexic.

These “bombardment marketers” (hey I coined a new phrase let’s get that out there) give everyone a bad name.  We have been trying to grow our list here at the coots and so far, it is pathetically small.  It is populated only by those who write here at the coots, plus a pity subscribe from Dr. Doolin from website in a weekend.  Even Bob was assimilated er invited to join the coots after his joining of the list.

It leads me to theorize.  There are 2 possibilities when it comes to our email list here.  One: people are so afraid of getting bombarded with Cantankerous Spam that they don’t sign up, or, Two: they found out that we make subscribers write for us.  I suspect number one is the culprit.  Here is the skinny on that though, I have been so disappointed with the lack of signups that I have sent out Zero emails to the list.  People on the list probably have forgotten about it.

Even the bait of a free ebook in what promises to be a fantastic course on how to be Cantankerous has not helped.  But I am going to put it out there again, with our fantastic new sign up pop up and the little sign up form right over there———>

Maybe I will get some hacker buddies together and figure out some code that will destroy the servers of anyone who sends out spam.  That would be worth an email sign up or two I am sure.

We all know that the definition of insanity is to continue doing something that doesn’t work and expecting something different to happen. Well maybe the deep dark secret about about being a Cantankerous Old Coot is that we are just plain nuts. As if to prove this conclusion, when I sat down to write a post for Coots, my mind just started in automatic mode. Before I knew it, I had written a whole new Coot’s lesson. It’s embarrassing but we don’t waste anything around here. Due to being raised by depression parents, I can’t throw anything away and so futile as it may be, here is

Coot’s Lesson 17- Don’t Mess with Sheep.

City folk may not know but sheep are really annoying critters –  except to another sheep. I know from bitter experience. Long ago In a misguided moment my father bought some sheep for the farm where I grew up. I don’t know where the idea came from but those sheep provided an important lesson for my young life. Unless you are a sheep dog, don’t ever try to influence a sheep to do anything it wasn’t already doing.  You will be worn out and the sheep will get really mad.

Other farm animals think.

On our farm we raised just about every kind of farm animal. We had cows, pigs, chickens, horses. Each of these species has its own quirks but underneath it was always apparent that there was some intelligence working. There was reasoning behind their actions and once you understood those reasons , you could always find a way to get them to do what you wanted. It wasn’t always easy and it sometimes took frustratingly long to get the animal’s response but with those animals you had something to work with. There was a brain working.

Not Sheep!

Sheep are entirely different. If sheep have a brain, they keep it hidden. They don’t act for their own benefit and they, for sure, wont act because you want them to. I remember one time when we wanted to move the sheep from a pasture into a pen by the barn. Our motives were pure because that’s where we put the feed. We opened the gate and herded the sheep toward the wide opening. Nothing threatening anywhere just the open gate and food. Some animals would go through that gate just because it was there. Some might smell the food. Others might go through the gate just because there were people hooping and hollering behind them. Sheep just balk. They balk at gates. They balk at new spaces. They balk at people whooping and hollering. They just balk for the sheer cussedness of balking.

We would drive them forward toward the gate and just when they reached it, they would veer away. We tried to surround them so they couldn’t turn. They stopped and starred at us. They just were not going through that gate. We kept trying until one sheep got careless and crossed into the pen and he was immediately rewarded when the rest of the sheep swept him into the corner. It was a victory of sorts because finally the sheep were where we wanted them but it hadn’t changed a thing. The sheep hadn’t learned a lesson and next time we wanted them to go through a gate it would be just the same. They wouldn’t remember that there was food in the pen and that the people hollering behind them were trying to help them. They would be just as stubborn. It was their nature.

Sheep will devour your soul.

So if you are a full fledged Cantankerous Old Coot or even a Coot wannabe, don’t mess with sheep. Quash all those impulses to help and let them go their own way. You will only waste your time and energy and really mess up your attitude. To top it off, it won’t matter one whit to the sheep. It will take superhuman effort on your part to get any response on the part of the sheep and nothing you can do will penetrate their brains. They are perfectly happy wherever they are and they don’t appreciate anybody trying to make them uncomfortable. Even if it is for their own good, they will never recognize it. As icing on the cake you will make them mad. They will never forgive you and go out of their ways to punish you for your efforts to help them. Don’t bother.

Steer clear of sheep.

The world is full of sheep. Strange as it may seem, that may be just what God planned but it’s way above my pay grade to decide that. What I do know is that a Cantankerous Old Coot needs to give sheep a wide berth. You may want to do them a good turn but there is nothing you can do to help them and much that they can do to pull you down to their level. If you want to be happy and successful and reach the very pinnacle of life as a Cantankerous Old Coot, never for get Coot’s Lesson 17- Don’t mess with Sheep!

 

Down with Twitter

Now I get it. Twitter is not for the hoi polloi. It’s a place where the elites can cast pearls before swine and smirk. No wonder I’m frustrated. I apparently don’t have the intellectual gravitas for Twitter. Cognoscenti use Twitter is for sharing those cosmic thoughts that regularly pop into their brains. Lately those cosmic insights for my brain seem to be in short supply. My impression of Twitter was that it was a place to post snappy one liners. Not that I’ve even been good at those either but, at least, I’ve got a chance.

twitterWhat could be more appealing than an audience panting for your input? Theoretically, the idea of a forum for pithy insights is appealing. Something happens. Your synapses crackle. The brain responds but then there’s a problem. What do you do with your inspiration? Blurt it out like fool with Tourettes? Write a letter to the New York Times? Share it with your brain trust? It’s not easy. If you leave it unsaid, it’s like the tree falling in the forest- nobody will know. You brain will explode. It’s a disaster.

When there is a problem, somebody will provide a solution. In this case, it’s Twitter. Continue reading »

July 4th

This has been a fine weekend to be an American.  I know there are those who may be reading this that are not Americans, so please bear with me.  Yesterday was July 4, 2010.  “I knew that” you are saying to yourself, and to the entire world, it was just another day.

For us Americans, the Fourth of July is a national holiday.  It is the day when we celebrate our independence from England.   The past aside, July fourth is one of my favorite holidays.

I love going to local festivals and just being with other people who are there to celebrate.  Some people, I think, do not really grasp the entire meaning of the Fourth of July.  They are there wearing Red, White and Blue, and singing the national anthem with everyone else, but if you ask them why, they may not know.

This post is not the do all, be all of July 4th history.  I don’t want or intend it to be.  What I am hoping to convey is what it means to be free and have a day to commemorate that.  It doesn’t matter what country you live in, you should be proud to live there.

234 years ago, British citizens living in North America decided that they were tired of being taxed by England without having representation in Parliament.  Lots of history skipped here, but suffice it to say that they decided that it was time to break with the King and England herself and be an Independent country.

On July 4th, 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote one of the most important documents in the history of the world.  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  These may be some of the most important words ever written down.

Most people know of that passage of the Declaration of Independence.  Many have not even read it.  I have included the full text at the bottom of this post.

It took years, but finally in 1787, the Constitution of the United States of America was written and signed, making us an independent Country.   The flag was adopted and we kept the Red, White, and Blue colors that we had as part of Great Britian.  Those symbols still mean Freedom to us.

Today, the Fourth of July is a huge holiday.  It is a time when, well, Our second President John Adams said it best: (he was off a couple of days but he really meant the 4th) The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

It is hard to argue with that.  July 4th is a time to remember those tired, bedraggled men who vanquished the great army of King George.  It is a time to remember that so many died for the right to be free.  It is a time to remember all of those through our history who have fought and died for our freedom.

It is a day to stand proud wearing the colors of our country, when we can all sing together the praises of Our Country and salute the flag that is so important.  In the movie The Patriot, one of the characters during the Revolutionary War picks up a worn out and bedraggled flag.  The flag is full of holes and is dirty.

Through the next few scenes he is shown sewing patches onto the flag, making it whole again.  Eventually, he is killed and his Father leads a group of Militia into a huge battle with the British, holding that flag that is now whole again.

It is a very emotional scene.  It is also something that I hope to always remember, and impart to others.  What may have seemed only a dirty piece of cloth to some, represented an idea that couldn’t die.  It couldn’t be left in the mud and forgotten.

Yesterday we gathered together as citizens of the United States of America.  Brothers and Sisters of one Nation.  A community that shared a barbecue, a festival, some good music, and some fireworks.  This is the type of thing that the Founders of this country must have hoped for.  A place where the citizens can do what they want, Free.

I love this Country that I call home.  Through all of  the politics and taxes and whatever else, This Country is Free.  Men and women for over 200 years have guaranteed, with their lives, that freedom.  I love to look at the flag flying in the breeze and to remember those people.

I love to be with my community and to feel patriotic.  I strive for that every day.

Whatever country you live in, feel patriotic.  Wherever you are, keep the history of your country in mind whenever you look at your flag.

I am an American.  I love America.  Today, July 5th, I am heading into the hospital with my wife to welcome Baby #4.

**Pre-Update, The baby came on July 1st!  It was a Boy! Still close to the Fourth.**

I couldn’t be more proud or more happy to have a child born so close to my favorite holiday.  That child will be free.  That child will be a patriot.  He or She will always have fireworks for their birthday.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
