Ha!  Got you on that one didn’t I.  Truth is I love football and now that it is back, albeit in preseason, the world is a better place, the planets are aligning and peace is coming.  But not amid NFL fans.

Here is what I am on about today.  My )(**&^^&*&&*^&^%*(&^*^&%*()_(*^%^&(*&%^$% kids and their complaining about me watching football.  I have choice words for them.  It is not like they have been raised from the womb to be football fans.  Not like some of the first outfits they ever wore bore Bronco blue and orange.  Not like the first phrase I was trying to get out of them was “Go Broncos!”

It is not even like they don’t have jersey’s to wear for games!  They just complain.  One goes so far as to complain about fishing but that is another post.

Granted this is just pre-season today.  There are 3 more preseason games to make them come around.  Or not.  I really don’t care as long as they don’t thwart my viewing.

I anxiously await more football.  For now, I want to go fishing.  But I have to get some money made.  Have a great Monday and look for a special promotion next week!

September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City: V...

It is hard to believe that it has been 11 years since the Twin Towers went down.

It is also interesting to note that every movie I have seen in the last 10 years where they show the skyline of New York City I actually know and miss the towers.  Any movie shot in New York before 2011 has the towers and I know that they are gone.

The city my parents live in do the flag field, one American flag for everyone who died in New York and Pennsylvania that day.  It is an awesome site.  The city hall has a flagpole that is a bronze recreation of the famous photo of the firemen raising the flag over the rubble.

I can remember that day very clearly.  I can remember my wife coming home shouting at me to get up at 7:30 on the morning.  I thought something was wrong with her or the apartment, but she was flipping on the TV and we watched the second plane hit the tower. We were glued to the TV the rest of the day.

During the Fourth of July celebrations we put on the patriotic playlist and a couple of those songs are ones that were made right after 9/11.  They are montages of news reports and eyewitness statements set to music.  They move even me to this day, remembering the lives lost, the heroism of the firefighters and police that went headlong into danger trying to save people.

And of course, the heroism of those men who wouldn’t let the other plane hit the capitol.  They traded their lives for their country.  Sure the building itself could be rebuilt, but the symbol would be marred.  The ideal of the United States would be tarnished.  Their sacrifice kept with the ideals of those rebels from 1776 who founded this country with their own blood.

When I think of those on that plane the lines from America the Beautiful, “Who more than selves their country loved” are fitting.  Patriots dream indeed.

So today, we are united as a country.  We are all here together, resisting tyranny, and defending this land with everything we have.

We are in the midst of division this year with the election coming up, and people clamoring for one side or another.  Today, we all stand as Americans, not black, not white, not republican, not democrat, Americans.   We look back at those who shone as examples of the American spirit.  We look with solemn remembrance at those innocents who died while at work.

We look at this day, September 11th, at Patriot Day, as a day to celebrate all that is good in the Spirit of America.  Don’t treat this as just another day.  Sing patriotic songs.  Fly your flag, read the Constitution, remember what this country was founded on.  Then, remember that all of those things were made by people who had ideals, who had vision, and who had the best interests of this country in mind.

Thank you Heroes and Patriots of 9/11, your sacrifice makes this a better country, and us better Americans.

California Snow- March 2011

California Snow - March 2011

It's hard to have fun in the snow

“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.” Carl Reiner

Coots don’t expect much!

When you are a Cantankerous Old Coot, you don’t expect the world to do you any favors. Age and experience teach that if it is possible for something to go wrong, then it will go wrong. More likely than not- very, very wrong. One of the excuses people make for living in California is that snow is optional. Unlike most of the rest of America, Californian’s can be sure that the only snow they see is the snow they wish to see. That’s been my story for over 30 years.  Why change t now?

All those years without snow can produce a selective blindness about the reality of snow, a naive innocence encouraged by too many Hallmark Christmas cards and perhaps a touch of senility. As a result, my family decided to vacation in the snow.

And sometimes what they expect is entirely wrong.

The idea was that March would be an ideal time to enjoy the beauty of the high Sierra snow with none of the inconveniences. Typically, the snow holds on at the end of Winter but the snowfall stops keeping roads clear and the air warm for any winter activities..

This year Mother Nature had different ideas. Our plans for ski lessons, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and fishing went awry after the first day. After one day out and about enjoying the beauty and planning the rest of the week, the blizzard hit.   Each day new snow and freezing temperatures kept us cabin bound. We experienced the full impact of winter during the rest of our short 5 day trip. Each day marked another foot of snow on our cars, hot tub and  picnic table. Each day we watched the snowplows block the driveway until the cabin owner arrived to clear our path. Each day we watched the news, hoping for a break in the weather that would free us from confinement.  It didn’t come.

I have renewed respect for Mother Nature.

Finally as we reached the end of our vacation, I was able to shake off the wonder and recognize that snow is a worthy and irrepressible opponent. It had gained control over our lives and would show no mercy.  I rediscovered that even the soft fluffy flakes that looked so beautiful in the palm of my hand were lethal in a pack. I remembered my misadventures driving in snow when I was much younger. I remembered getting stuck and fighting to keep from collisions on icy roads. And I decided that it was time to return to my snow-optional home a mere 70 miles away.

Snow is fine.  I just don’t need to be in it.

Snow is beautiful. Snow makes winter sports possible and quite interesting when you are watching on TV.  Snow is a helpful tool for storing Winter precipitation for Spring and Summer release. But fun in the snow is not a necessary component of my happy life

Maybe next time?

In case you missed it, I got a speeding ticket last summer and ever since I have been trying my respectful best to get an explanation for the itemized charges listed on my courtesy notice. With the size of the fine and the fact that nearly 50 percent of those still holding jobs in California work for the government, you would think that there would be somebody that knows the answer to my questions.

So far I have discovered that it isn’t the courts and so I am taking the question to my assembly member. I’m pretty sour on elected officials these days. Last year letters to my Senators were not answered. But I remain an incurable optimist, wanting to believe that the system works and that in Blue California, even Democrats feel some responsibility to their constituents since I live in a district where Republicans have won in the past.

I feel just like Charlie Brown with the football, but here I go again looking for an answer from the government.

Dear Assembly Member:

A citation for speeding on I-80 last summer left me confused about the components of the penalty assessed by the Solano County Superior Court. While not disputing the violation, I could find no explanation for the services itemized in the Courtesy Letter from the Court (attached copy) or the actual monetary amount for these unrelated services.

I wrote a letter to the Court (attached copy) requested details about these items and an explanation for why I should be paying for services not required or related to my citation. Specifically, I question the medical airlift which I did not require and the charge for court security which, by paying my fine and not appearing in Court, I should actually be saving the Court’s time and relieving the burdens of Court security. Additionally , it seems unreasonable to assess me for the officer’s efforts to determine that I did in fact violate the speed limit which is in my opinion is part of his normal duties whether he is assessing my behavior or any of the other drivers on I-80. I do not dispute the responsibility for the fine but it seems wrong to add unrelated costs and the regular working duties of the offices on top of the specified fine.

Marilyn, deputy clear at the Solano County superior Court, replied to my letter (attached copy) but unfortunately none of the check boxes in the pre-printed form applied to my questions and she provided no further help.

I feel that as a taxpayer, I am entitled to full disclosure of the cost responsibilities assigned to me as part of the Court assessed charges on the Courtesy Letter including the actual amount for each, separate from the violation itself and the justification for adding them onto the fines for a speeding violation.

If I can’t expect an explanation from the Court regarding this matter, then I would like to know who in the vast bureaucracy of California government has that responsibility. Perhaps I am clinging to naive and old-fashioned notions but back when they used to teach civics in the schools, I learned that the government worked for me and not the other way around.

In the hope that somewhere in the vast California government payroll, there is somebody who first of all knows the answers to my questions and second of all, can find the time in their busy schedules to answer the question of a taxpayer, I am sending this question to you. hoping that you will either pass my request on to the right people or let me know where to send the request.

Sincerely,

Ralph Carlson

So now  I’m watching my mailbox again with eager anticipation.  I really hope that someone knows the answer to my questions and feels responsible to sit down and write me a letter.  With the amount of money I paid for the speeding ticket surely I am entitled to that.   Don’t you think?  Or am I really Charlie Brown?

This is the current logo for The Rant
Image via Wikipedia

Do you see what I have been reduced to this week?  I am actually going to write a rant about another rant.  My brain is getting soft this week, maybe I need to split up the podcasts.

So, the other day I was sent a link to this rant that I have reproduced below.  The audio is not very good, it is not your speakers.  The day that I received this link I didn’t have time to watch it right away.  But I thought, hey, it’s a Bill Murray Rant it has to be good right?

I finally got around to watching it and was sorely disappointed.  Not only was it an extremely poor rant, it was way to scripted and poorly acted.  Not what I expected from a Bill Murray rant.

In fact, it was so bad that I had to go listen to my Denis Leary CD just to get my ears burning with a good rant or two.

What is the point and why would you want to watch this clip now?  Well I don’t have a good answer for that.  I think it is a case of an actor who can really deliver some lines in movies gets pegged to try stand up.  And then doesn’t write it himself.  There is just no soul to it.  I don’t blame Bill Murray, I blame whoever wrote this piece of garbage.

I only agree with the line about R2D2 being a fine actor.  Can’t go wrong with a Star Wars reference.  Here is a tip from me to you, completely free but still a part of the Cantankerous Old Coots University.  If you are going to rant on something, it had better sound real.  You can write it out and memorize it but when you deliver it, it should sound like you are extemporizing and not like you are reading the phone book.

Check out Bill Hicks, Denis Leary, George Carlin and old Dennis Miller for how to do it right.  If you are really adventurous, Sam Kinison awaits you.

Send in your questions for Ask A Coot Saturday and have a great weekend.
