Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Ahh immortal words, “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”  Ferris Beuller was right.  My youngest daughter went to school this year and looking back on it, these past 6 years have gone by very quickly.  I look at my youngest and he will be in school in 4 short years.

This year was a different birthday….it just didn’t matter as much.  I am not sure why, maybe just getting older.  If it wasn’t for the kids it may have passed quietly and been just a blip.  I am quite sure that I was more excited for Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Yep, life moves fast, somewhere we all have to find the perspective to look around and see what is actually happening.  My oldest is 12 and growing up way too fast.  It is disconcerting to think that she will be an adult in only 6 years.  Now is the time to make those count, because we cant get them back.

Go outside and enjoy fall.  I went camping last weekend.  All of the trees were changing, the elk were bugling and the fish were moderately biting.  The temperature never got above 70.  It was great, and it sure beat cleaning out the garage.

Don’t miss life sitting here in front of a computer.  Go live life, winter is coming.  (bonus points if you take that as a reference and not a statement of the changing seasons.)

My aunt sent me this in an email and after a quick check the numbers seem about right.  If you were not mad before you will be.  See Sidebar Video.

From an ER doctor

Remember I live and work in a border state overrun with illegals; they make more money having kids than we earn working full time.

Today I had a 25 yr old with 8 kids ~  that’s right 8! All are illegal anchor babies, and she had the nicest nails, cell phone, hand bag, clothing. etc. She makes about $1500 monthly for each; do the math.

I used to say “we are the dumbest nation on earth.”  Now I must say and sadly admit, YOU are the dumbest people on earth (that includes me) for we elected the idiot idealogues who have passed the bills that allow this. Sorry ~ we need a revolution! Vote em all out in 2010!

WHAT BETTER REASON DO WE HAVE TO VOTE OUT OF OFFICE ANY AND

ALL INCUMBENT POLITICIANS  WHO CREATED SUCH A STUPID SITUATION.

WHY ARE OUR SOCIAL SECURITY PENSIONERS PUTTING UP WITH THIS CRAP ?

WHY HAS NOT ANYONE YET FILED A CLASS ACTION DISCRIMINATION SUIT ?

REMEMBER – IN NOVEMBER, 2010 WE HAVE

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO CLEAN OUT

THE ENTIRE HOUSE AND ONE-THIRD OF THE SENATE.

This is an insult and a kick in the butt to all of us….

Get mad and pass it on – I don’t know how, but maybe some good will come of this travesty.

If the immigrant is over 65, they can apply for SSI and Medicaid and get more than a woman on Social Security, who worked from 1944 until 2004.

She is only getting $791 per month because she was born in 1924 and there’s a ‘catch 22’.

It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.  Each can also obtain an additional $580 in social assistance, for a total of $2,470 a month.

This compares to a single pensioner, who after contributing to the growth and development of America for 40 to 50 years, can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

Consider sending this to all your American friends, so we can all be ticked off and maybe get the refugees cut back to $1,012 and the pensioners up to $2,470.  Then we can enjoy some of the money we were forced to submit to the Government over the last 40 or 50 or 60 years. And not to receive an increase for 2010!! Vote them all out of office!!!

Please forward to every American to expose what our elected politicians have been doing the past 11 years to over-taxed Americans.

Liberty, sir, is the primary object, …the battles of the Revolution were fought, not to make ‘a great and mighty empire’, but ‘for liberty’. Patrick Henry

Main Street at the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney ...

Is it just me or was Friday just yesterday.  Must be me becasue Friday was last week!  And then March is gone as well.

Oh Well.  These days it seems like time is fleeting and going faster than is really necessary, but it is still going!  We are trying to figure out what we will be doing when we get to Florida for Amelia’s Wish and there is an amazing amount of crap to do in Disney World.  It seems like we should be able to sit down and have the whole thing planned in an hour or two but we are going on a week or more and still don’t have everything nailed down.

When it does get nailed down, it will change though.  That is the only thing I am certain of.  Maybe I need to get Ralph to help out.  He has been halfway around the world.  I have a 6 hour trip.  With 4 kids.  Maybe I can get “Uncle Ralph” to come and we can pick up “Uncle Bob” on the way through.

That would be wild.  3 coots in the Magic Kingdom.  Sounds like a novel where at least one gets arrested.  Maybe I should write that as a series of shorts while we are gone.  I am going to be making videos and writing about the trip anyway over at Ameliasmakeawish.com.  I am rambling and have now forgotten the original point of this post.

Maybe the sands of time that I started with should be compared with the brain cells that seem to be deserting me at much the same rate. I could blame it on sleep deprivation or getting older, but I don’t know the cause.

How fast is your hourglass being emptied?  And what should be the more pressing question, are you going to be able to turn it over?  If you remember, Dorthy tried in vain to turn over the hourglass that the witch set for her….is that where we are here?

September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City: V...

It is hard to believe that it has been 11 years since the Twin Towers went down.

It is also interesting to note that every movie I have seen in the last 10 years where they show the skyline of New York City I actually know and miss the towers.  Any movie shot in New York before 2011 has the towers and I know that they are gone.

The city my parents live in do the flag field, one American flag for everyone who died in New York and Pennsylvania that day.  It is an awesome site.  The city hall has a flagpole that is a bronze recreation of the famous photo of the firemen raising the flag over the rubble.

I can remember that day very clearly.  I can remember my wife coming home shouting at me to get up at 7:30 on the morning.  I thought something was wrong with her or the apartment, but she was flipping on the TV and we watched the second plane hit the tower. We were glued to the TV the rest of the day.

During the Fourth of July celebrations we put on the patriotic playlist and a couple of those songs are ones that were made right after 9/11.  They are montages of news reports and eyewitness statements set to music.  They move even me to this day, remembering the lives lost, the heroism of the firefighters and police that went headlong into danger trying to save people.

And of course, the heroism of those men who wouldn’t let the other plane hit the capitol.  They traded their lives for their country.  Sure the building itself could be rebuilt, but the symbol would be marred.  The ideal of the United States would be tarnished.  Their sacrifice kept with the ideals of those rebels from 1776 who founded this country with their own blood.

When I think of those on that plane the lines from America the Beautiful, “Who more than selves their country loved” are fitting.  Patriots dream indeed.

So today, we are united as a country.  We are all here together, resisting tyranny, and defending this land with everything we have.

We are in the midst of division this year with the election coming up, and people clamoring for one side or another.  Today, we all stand as Americans, not black, not white, not republican, not democrat, Americans.   We look back at those who shone as examples of the American spirit.  We look with solemn remembrance at those innocents who died while at work.

We look at this day, September 11th, at Patriot Day, as a day to celebrate all that is good in the Spirit of America.  Don’t treat this as just another day.  Sing patriotic songs.  Fly your flag, read the Constitution, remember what this country was founded on.  Then, remember that all of those things were made by people who had ideals, who had vision, and who had the best interests of this country in mind.

Thank you Heroes and Patriots of 9/11, your sacrifice makes this a better country, and us better Americans.

Another week of “non-funny” political news…this is getting old.  Looking at silly government stupidity is a lot more fun!

This week I have a show for you that is duplicated across 4 sites…JuicyMaters, Common Sense Conversation, and Haylestorm Interactive, along with being here at Cantankerous Old Coots.  It’s not that I’m too lazy to do separate shows this week…though that IS an incentive…it is that it is a message everyone who uses the internet needs to be familiar with.

Anyway…some of you might have noticed many sites on the internet were protesting something called “SOPA” Wednesday.  Some sites like Wikipedia were completely gone for the day.  Some sites, like da Coots, had an opening page about the protest that visitors could click through to get to the site.  And then, there were site owners who did nothing.  Ralph, Justin, and I felt the issue was important enough to take Coots dark.  Here is why:

He also writes about homesteading and yurts over at JuicyMaters.com and rants about politics at Common-Sense-Conversation.com Most of the time, though, you'll find him at HayleStorm.net, cranking out great websites for clients OR writing tutorials teaching them to build their own sites.
