This post today represents the 199th post on Cantankerous Old Coots.  I thought we could take a peek back at the year that was and explore a bit about this site, and the snarky comment that started it all.

It is only appropriate that Ralph will have the 200th post on the Coots.  Not only has he posted the most on this site, it was his comment over on my blog Catharsis of the Bogue that started all of this madness.  It was March 22nd of last year that I started this site.  On the 23rd I wrote the following post:

Well folks I did something very impulsive last night. I was sitting here trying to come up with some topic to write on. I am tired and only partially fueled by caffeine. My wife said I had that “look” and tonight’s post would be a doozy. She has seen the writing frenzy that exhaustion and caffeine has wrought.
The problem was this. Carlos sucked all of the ideas out of me during the PreWriting Challenge! Ok not really but it has been a day of writers block for post titles. I have a couple of story ideas though. I had a thought this morning after taking the kids to school that I hope I was not running dry of ideas. I am almost at my 3 month mark and ready to push past it.
I know there are more ideas, I just either need more sleep or more caffeine to make them flow. Or some good inspiration. I went and read some blogs, left some comments and tweeted a bit. After that I went back to look at my comments just hoping there was something there.
And there was! My internet buddy and purveyor of many life experiences Ralph(http://ralphcarlsonblog.com/) had left a comment. The discussion was about niches, and fitting in, when Ralph says,
“I am not sure that there is any market for cantankerous old coots but if there were, I’d claim it.”
I laughed and replied that I would sign up for the RSS feed of that. I didn’t think much more about it until Dave Doolin pipes up with his sage advice to go claim it. So I did. Coming in the next week or so, I will have a bunch of work with another blog at www.cantankerousoldcoots.com.
I think I am going to fill the blog with the wisdom and rants of those older than me, even though I am getting up there myself. I hope to get Ralph to fill the first guest post with something profound, and later Dave with something that would be totally inappropriate on his site.
I need to create a badge….crossed Preparation H and Ben Gay over a grouchy old guy’s face…. Our motto could be “Whatever” and our niche is “Advice for life from old coots.” We of course would have to adopt a Red Green type lodge… Hmmmm there are many possibilities. I would love to hear suggestions. We would have bylaws too…if you are under 40 you need to have an old coot persona or you can’t be published. Only rants on things that were better in the past could be posted. Any bowel problems are better off on your own site unless they have a really funny punchline and a cute nurse involved.
Wow I must be tired. This is going to be huge amounts of fun. Let me know what you think in the comments and sign up for my newsletter, I will keep updates in that as well!
Thanks for reading!

And now here we are 200 posts, 6 authors and 134,000 words published.  It has been a good year.  If you are new to this blog, thanks for coming!  Sign up for our newsletter and get the first Coots e-book from Cantankerous Old Coots University.  If you are one of our long time readers, thanks for sticking around and boosting our numbers!  If you have never commented, now is a good time to do so!  If you feel feverish, head on over to one of the Coots other blogs: Ralph’s, Bob’s or mine.

Also, Bob is a little under the weather this weekend and will not be spending it in his yurt where he belongs.  Send him a message over there to the right or to bob@cantankerousoldcoots.com  and let him know you are thinking about him.  Hopefully he will be back at full strength soon!

Have a great weekend

Hello folks.  Today’s podcast is inspired by a post over on my friend Maria Muir’s site.  It is about the absurd lengths the TSA is going through to make sure citizens get violated, I mean secured.  Go check Maria’s stuff out at MariaMuir.com. She will love the traffic.  The link to the article is after the podcast!

This pic is just a portent of what will be expected in the airport in the next few years. I can picture the agent (a large woman with a german accent strangely enough) saying, “Now you will stand like this while we check you for incendiary devices in your lower intestine!”  Scary thoughts.

Thanks for listening.  Here is the link to Maria’s post: http://mariamuir.com/2010/12/01/tsa-the-new-sex-predators-grooming-your-children-with-your-consent/comment-page-1/#comment-3086

Wolves vs. The Sheep

 Posted by at 22:13  principles

Man there has been a lot of talk about sheep on here lately.  Maybe I should talk about the wolves.  Maybe I should wax poetic about how we should all work on becoming wolves, kings of industry and the fittest survivors.

Then I would call BS.  Cantankerousness does not lend itself to pushing one way or the other.  We lean towards giving you the facts and letting you decide how to proceed.  We have nearly given up and let the sheep run wild.

We have given much information on being your own person and taking control much like a wolf would.  But the truth is, you have to decide for yourself.  I for one am going to stay somewhere in between.  I am going to stay cantankerous.  I am not going to follow like a sheep and I will only lead as long as it suits me.

What do you think?  does being a sheep suit you?  Or are you a wolf that is going to tear everything apart?  Or are you just here to learn Cantankerousness so that you can be your own person, er old Coot.

Tell us below, or we will just keep arguing in the comments.

Remember December 7, 1941

Today we present a special edition of the coots, outside of our regular posts.  If you were missing Bob yesterday, so were the rest of us.  He had some internet issues out there in the yurt, hopefully he can get that fixed quickly and bring back the Cantakerous!  Now, onto today.

Today is “A Day that will live in infamy.”  Not today exactly, but December 7, 1941.

President Roosevelt gave us this phrase that is now part of the American lexicon along with “Life, Liberty, and Happiness” and “We Hold These Truths”.

That is the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, HI and brought the United States into World War II.  Even though this happened 69 years ago, we still need to remember those brave Men and Women who gave their lives that December morning, and those who immediately rose to the occasion and prevented more loss.

I am not going to go into details, there are too many other good links out there (see above).  I would like to hit some highlights though.

We were devastated to lose so many ships.  Here is a list of the ships we lost that day:
4 battleships sunk,
4 battleships damaged including 1 run aground
2 destroyers sunk, 1 damaged
1 other ship sunk, 3 damaged
3 cruisers damaged
4 midget submarines sunk,
1 midget submarine run aground,
29 aircraft destroyed,
188 aircraft destroyed
155 aircraft damaged

And then the loss of life that still grieves us:

55 airmen killed
9 submariners killed
2,402 military killed
1,247 military wounded
57 civilians killed
35 civilians wounded

There were also many who rose up and gave service to their country “above and beyond the call of duty” and were justly decorated.  In the wake of the battle 15 Medals of Honor, 51 Navy Crosses, 53 Silver Crosses, four Navy and Marine Corps Medals, one Distinguished Flying Cross, fourDistinguished Service Crosses, one Distinguished Service Medal, and three Bronze Stars were awarded.  Most military personnel are not there for medals or accolades.  They just happen to be the ones who step up and do what needs to be done.

I have written before about Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Patriot Day.  Today is another to be remembered for the brave souls who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom and liberty, just by being there that day, and for those who survived and went on to fight the battles in the Pacific.  Gentlemen, (and ladies of course) we salute you, thank you for your service.

I would like to thank Ralph for keeping the Coots afloat for the last little while.  He has done a very Cantankerous job! Now for today, another lesson.

Wednesday Ralph was writing about email and the evils of so much garbage threatening to overwhelm us.  This week I have taken a new stand with that.  I just don’t give a rat’s ass about it.  I click select all and scan down the list for things from my mom or the government and then delete the whole damn list.  It has been nice to have an empty inbox. Am I missing some things?  Probably.  Do I give a rat’s ass about it?  NO.  There is a tie in and a lesson in one.

There has to be a point where you just give up caring what other people think and do what you need to do. I had that realization a while ago when it comes to my family.  Now, I will be 36 next week and it has taken me almost all of that time to finally let go of my Father’s tyranny and not care about his opinion any more.  After his hesitancy in having anything to do with my daughter after her kidney transplant (she was 3 when she had it!) to not coming and seeing his newest grandson for over a month, I don’t give a rats ass anymore. I will still be respectful, but I just don’t care about his hold over me any more.  That may be a sad statement but I have finally grown up or at least more Cantankerous.

A very large part of the Cantankerous Old Coot Not Giving A Rats Ass lesson is this, you are your own person.  You have the right, nay the obligation to be your own person.  There has to be a point somewhere in your life where you take a stand and say, “I am me.  NO one can push their thoughts and ideals on me.  I will be me and I will take control of my life and my own family, my way.”

That is not an easy thing to do.  It is necessary.  So your homework this week is this, go find something that is stealing control of part of you.  Find it, look at it lovingly, and smash it to the ground!  Literally or figuratively I don’t care, but be sure to yell at it, “I don’t give a rats ass about you anymore!!!”  You will feel better and you will start to let go of the things that are keeping you down, weather it be family or email.  Quit giving a rats ass and you will be better off.

-Justin

And really, when this article was bein written, Zemanta put up a bunch of pics of Ralph Nader.  Is he a rats ass?  I don’t give a rat’s ass about him but I really don’t need to see him littering up my sidebars.  What another bunch of crap I am done caring about.
