The Second Year of Cantankerosity

When Justin started this blog, it was a wild ride. Justin set it up and I pitched in to bail him out. We had plans for Coots to be a support site for coots or all ages who were developing their own cantankerous natures. The first idea was lessons that all coots need to know which naturally led to Cantankerous Old Coots University.

Our dream was to unleash a free wheeling approach to life which didn’t ask for permission and didn’t buy conventional wisdom. We thought that it would be easy to build a community around cantankerosity.

Well it’s worked. We grown a readership that amazes us. We have regular readers who check regularly. There is a market for straight talk about life. Still, after a year, it’s time to step back and ask some questions. We don’t want to rest on our laurels. We want to take Coots to a new high platitude of success (as I remember the original Mayor Daley say when I was in college).

So today, I’m putting the challenge to our readers. Tell us what you want.

1. Do you want more Coot’s Lessons?

2. Would you like audios for those lessons?

3. Do you enjoy the themed topics where all three of us address a topic?

4. Do you want to know more about Justin’s kettlebell music?

5. Do you prefer philosophical posts or anecdotal posts?

6. Do you love a good rant?

7. Would you like an interview of Bob, of Justin, or even me?

They say that too many choices makes it impossible to make decisions so I’ve probably overdone it here but I just can’t control myself. I’m going to give you one question to answer today. Just pick your favorite from the above statements. Tell us which one you would like to see more of. Or just check none of the above. Be aware, however, if you select ‘none of the above’ that you have to leave your request in a comment. There is no free lunch around here, you know.

  1. Congratulations you guys. You’ve been an inspiration to me
I want more rants!!! Now they could come in a lesson on How To Rant, or an interview while, perhaps Bob rants, or whatever. let it rip!

  2. I went for more rants, however I feel the need to clarify!

You seem to bring the most spark when writing those sorts of posts, and that’s what resonates with me the most over here. I like the ‘Down with’ setup, as well as the philosophical stuff.

Themes are a good idea I think but you really need to choose better ones!

Also, more politics? Both Canada and Scotland (ok, and Wales and the UK as a whole on a different issue) have had elections in the last week or so but not a peep! Ours was concluded yesterday and had particularly shocking results, for the record.

  3. Heather,
Over here its all Obama-Osama, all the time. Who won?

  4. You sound so deprived (makes a change from it being us lol).

Scottish National party wiped the floor with the others because the Liberal Democrat vote plummeted to levels we didn’t expect. There was a huge drop forecast for them since they messed us around in Westminster but they’ve effectively been shouldered out of Scotland.

Instead of their votes going to both Labour and SNP they went almost exclusively to SNP. In addition, some of Labour’s weaker candidates also lost votes. Because of the way they had their party set up, the candidates that lost seats (at least, for the most part) weren’t kept on the more general party list either and therefore got removed from parliament.

Iain Gray (Labour) held on to his seat by less than 200 votes, Alec Salmond (SNP) took his seat with well over a 15k majority, and Tavish Scot (Liberal Democrat) nearly lost his to SNP but not as close as the Labour leader. Conservatives under Annabel Goldie didn’t gain their leaders seat, however that wasn’t expected to begin with.

… Damnit, I’ve just given it away that I paid attention now.

Canada, I think that Conservatives won again though I’m not as certain of the details.

For the regional council elections Labour picked up more seats in England (over 200 last I checked) but not as many as previously hoped, with Liberal Democrats again taking huge losses.

AV vote I’ve yet to check on actually, hang on. Ok, it’s still being counted but it looks to be on course for a 69% no vote (meaning we keep first past the post and Liberals again don’t do well at all since this was part of their campaign).

Should about cover it for the moment. =)

    • So does the Scottish National Party want to break Scotland free of the UK? What difference would it make for regular Scots?

  5. Yep, indeed they do. That’s their main focus.

At this point them winning means that we get to vote on whether we want independence or not. If it turns out that the majority of us do, they go into negotiations with westminster. That could go multiple ways from us successfully splitting to having them take away our devolved government (yep, turns out they Can do that).

If it does go ahead though we’d have a lot of financial challenges to get through… Scotland’s exports aren’t massive, we import a lot, and the likelihood is that unless we get an extremely good deal we’ll be dirt poor (as opposed to just ‘poor’ if we get a deal). Plus side being that we gain greater control over our own policies, budgets, etc and aren’t as at mercy of what they decide in England.

Oh, as an update, Tavish Scot has resigned as the Liberal Democrats party leader but is keeping his seat, and Iain Gray (Labour) looks to follow suit in September/October once the party has figured out where they’re headed.

    • Heather,
So are you saying that Scot’s would rather be dirt poor that part of the UK? And would that mean getting out of the EU?

  6. Now that this is reposted, how about some more response? What do you like, guys?
